Under the general supervision and direction of the Student Health Center Director and the Medical Chief of Staff, the incumbent will be responsible for providing direct primary and preventive health care and education to patients utilizing established protocols. The incumbent will work collaboratively with all the Student Health Center staff and will actively participate in health education activities, training of health related personnel, and development of policies, protocols and procedures. Additional duties include participation in health center and campus wide committees when assigned.
The Nurse Practitioner's responsibilities include:
Provides assessment, diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions to patients, utilizing established protocols, and in collaboration with student health center physicians.
Provides comprehensive health assessments, differential diagnosis and prescribes treatments for medical issues.
Provides referrals as indicated.
Works independently in the clinical setting, but able to work collaboratively with a variety of CSUSB departments such as Counseling and Psychological Services, SSD and others, to facilitate a comprehensive experience for all students.
Performs complete routine physical examinations including interpretation and evaluation of diagnostic test results.
Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and preventive counseling and education regarding reproductive health needs for both women and men, including but not limited to STI's, contraception, and pregnancy.
Interpretation of patient's medical history, physical exam, and diagnostic tests, and recognition between normal, normal variance, and abnormal findings. Follow up on all abnormal findings either by intervention, counseling, or referral on or off campus.
Assessment of psychosocial issues, providing counseling within scope of practice, and making referrals as necessary.
Administers first aid and urgent care and assists in contacting paramedics and emergency transport through the campus system when necessary.
Establishes and documents plan of care with complete documentation in accordance with AAAHC requirements, using the electronic medical record system.
Works cooperatively with Student Health Center's staff in providing quality patient care
Meets as needed with the physicians and other providers for chart review, problem- solving, and education
Understands, supports and complies with the policies and procedures of the Student Health Center (SHC)
Functions as a mentor and resource for Registered Nurses, Medical Assistants and Clinical Assistants to ensure quality of care standards are maintained.
Participates in Peer Review
Reviews, develops and updates nurse practitioner procedures and protocols in accordance with Nurse Practice Acts
Participates in accreditation activities
Participates in Quality Improvement activities as assigned e.g.: in-service education, established meetings, committees, patient education activities and programs to improve the level of care provided in the Student Health Center.
Provides consultative services on health related issues as needed to other campus departments and programs.
Establishes and maintains cooperative and sensitive working relationships with a diverse, multicultural population and campus community; participates in student health center and campus wellness activities.
Participates in the development, selection and maintenance of printed education materials. May be asked to prepare workshops on a variety of health topics of interest to college students.
Performs other related duties supporting the daily operation of the Student Health and Psychological Counseling Center as assigned.
Applicants must possess:
Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program, or possess equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
A valid and current California license as a Registered Nurse
A BRN certificate evidencing that the incumbent is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. National certification is preferred, but not required.
A valid and current BRN Furnishing Certificate.
Sufficient experience in a medical specialty applicable to their position to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner.
Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods and procedures, along with a thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices and protocols relative to the scope of practice.
Thorough knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws and regulations, along with a general knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices.
The ability to use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools, interpret laboratory and other test results, along with the ability keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent's scope of practice.
The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse campus community.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Current California licensure as a Nurse Practitioner
Prescriptive authority issued by the California State Board of Nursing
Current DEA registration
Current Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner
Current Basic Life Support Certification [CPR]
Adult, family practice experience
Master's degree or above
Experience with contraception, women's health and primary care psychiatric issues.
Experience working with an Electronic Medical Records System (EMR)
Commitment to illness prevention and a wellness model of healthcare delivery
Ability to operate diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment, electronic medical record software, Microsoft Windows applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Ability to establish and maintain effective service-oriented relationships with all customers (e.g. students, faculty, staff, outside agencies, regulatory representatives, vendors, and the community) and provide exceptional customer service
Ability to create and maintain a challenging, innovative, positive work environment
Ability to select, provide lead work direction to, train, and evaluate clinical and paraprofessional staff
Excellent oral and written communication skills (e.g. presentation and public speaking; writing daily correspondence, policies, procedures, reports and related documents) with the ability to communicate with internal and external customers

Ability to adapt in the work environment to meet patient or organizational needs (e.g. work schedule and assignment).
