California State University Maritime Academy 2019 Summer Cruise Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Position
California State University, Maritime Academy has an opening for a Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to work on our training ship cruise this summer from May 1 to June 3. The ship will be traveling from Vallejo through the Panama Canal, then making port in Barbados before reaching Lisbon, Portugal.
The position is about 4 weeks long. The Training Ship Golden Bear (TSGB) summer cruises serve as a seagoing training and educational experience for the students at Cal Maritime as part of their preparation for entering maritime related careers.
The sick bay team consists of a physician, an FNP or PA, and a counselor. Having previous student health, ER, or urgent care experience and an enjoyment of life at sea are beneficial.
Nurse Practitioner - Required Education and Experience: Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience (academic degree or certificate preferred). Incumbents must be clinically competent in their specialty (typically as a Family Nurse Practitioner) and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner in an isolated primary care setting.
Required License and Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid US state license in good standing as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner. Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate and a valid DEA number and certificate for controlled substance prescribing. ACLS required.
Physician Assistant - Required Education and Experience: Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Physician Assistant medical training program or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities (academic degree or certificate preferred). Incumbents must be clinically competent and possess sufficient experience to perform the duties of a Physician Assistant in an isolated primary care setting.
Required License and Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid US state license in good standing to practice as a Physician Assistant and have passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate for controlled substance prescribing. ACLS required. Duties and Work Environment
Duties for the position include a scheduled workday of approx. 8am-5pm, and occasional after hours care for treatment of injuries or illness. The physician and NP/PA staff the sick bay and typically split the schedule to provide basic medical care for a crew of approximately 350 students, staff, and faculty. Other duties include routine student physicals.
There is usually ample time for reading and using the ship's gym. Time in port is split on and off duty with the physician. A private stateroom and meals are provided. Airfare to and from the departure and arrival ports is provided as needed. As this is a training ship for maritime academy students, lodging is available for the medical staff only.
Cruise Hiring and Background Check Requirements - A pre-cruise physical exam is required to participate on the training cruise. A background check (including fingerprinting, a criminal records check, and a drug test) must be satisfactorily completed before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
