Huntington Hospital’s PGY1 pharmacy residency program is designed to give highly motivated residents optimum independence in a supportive and state-of-the-art environment. The overall purpose of the residency program is to develop the necessary skills to become a competent pharmaceutical care practitioner. The residency will emphasize the development of clinical, teaching, and leadership abilities. Learning experiences include drug therapy management and monitoring in acute patient care areas (including general medicine, critical care, pediatrics/neonatology, hematology/oncology, and emergency medicine), infectious diseases, and ambulatory care. The PGY1 resident also gains experience in practice management as an active member of the pharmacy management team and through various administrative projects. The PGY1 resident will also conduct pharmacy practice research and serve as preceptors to pharmacy students.
This PGY2 specialty residency in Emergency Medicine (EM) Pharmacy Practice is a 12-month intensive training program that will prepare the resident to establish and provide clinical pharmacy services in an Emergency Department (ED). Responsibilities of the EM pharmacy resident will include provision of direct patient care in the ED including, consultative and bedside care for emergent and urgent pharmacotherapeutic and toxicologic problems, evaluation and assessment of drug-related problems, drug-induced disease states, and discharge counseling. The resident is a key source of drug information for physicians, nurses and patients, as well as investigation and reporting of adverse drug events for ED patients.
The PGY2 Infectious Diseases specialty residency is a 12-month postgraduate program offered jointly by the USC School of Pharmacy and an affiliated clinical site, Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. This program centers on developing the competencies necessary to provide pharmaceutical care to patients with infectious diseases by providing balanced training in patient care, teaching, and clinical research in the area of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy.
